Newcastle is the predominant city of the Hunter Region, centred on the mouth of the Hunter River, about 117 kilometres from the Sydney CBD. Hunter Street and King Street form the city centre's principal commercial streets within a metropolitan area shaped by the port, heavy industry and later economic diversification. Newcastle Light Rail now serves the city centre.

Newcastle is an office and consulting market, with office suites and floors in a major regional business centre and port city. Its closest commercial comparisons are Cooks Hill, Newcastle West and Wickham.
